MAY 1, 2025 – Earlier this week, the federal House Education and Workforce Committee submitted their committee markup of the budget reconciliation process – they intend to cut more than $330 billion from student aid programs as part of the budget reconciliation package.
Partners for a Hunger-Free Oregon released the following statement from Executive Director Sarah Weber-Ogden:
“Slashing federal student aid by over $330 billion is not only short-sighted, it’s dangerous. These cuts imperil students who are already facing food and housing insecurity, and undermine the future of Oregon’s workforce. If we want a strong, equitable economy, we need to support college students—not abandon them.
“Oregon is one of the most expensive states in the country to receive a college degree, and over 40% of Oregon college students are already facing food or housing insecurity. This decimation of federal financial aid will without a doubt increase the basic needs crisis we are already seeing at colleges all around Oregon.
“Young adults are consistently told that a college education is the best way to ‘pull themselves up by their bootstraps,’ but this Congress seems intent on knocking their feet out from under them instead.”
Executive Director Sarah Weber-Ogden is available for interviews to discuss the impact of federal budget cuts on Oregon students. Please contact [email protected] to coordinate.
