It is written in Oregon statute that “All persons have the right to be free from hunger” (ORS 458.530), yet 1 in 8 Oregonians are food insecure, and that number is on the rise.

Access to food is foundational to the strength of our communities, and hunger is deeply interlaced with other integral issues like housing and health. In a changing federal landscape, it is even more vital that Oregon legislators act now to protect Oregonians facing food insecurity.

Below you’ll see our three priority policies this legislative session.

Establish School Meals for All 

Consistent access to food is central to children’s ability to learn and grow. No matter where they live in the state or what is happening at home, a child shouldn’t experience hunger at school.

School Meals for All will eliminate unequal access to school meals for children in Oregon, improve school food practices and support thriving communities throughout the food system. When passed, Oregon will be the tenth state to pass Universal School Meals for All policies.

Food for All Oregonians 

Thousands of Oregonians face hunger each day — simply because of where we were born. For too long, individuals and families have been left out of food assistance programs, like Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), sometimes called “food stamps,” based on immigration status. Food for All Oregonians is building community power to bring an end to this legacy, to bring an end to hunger.

Student Basic Needs

College and university students in Oregon are reporting increasing rates of food insecurity, housing instability and challenges affording and accessing textbooks, transportation, childcare, and other basic needs. The Student Basic Needs and Workforce Stabilization Act is a bipartisan, student-centered effort to support student basic needs initiatives, affordable student housing, and textbook affordability in Oregon.

We will also be supporting a suite of bills that address upstream drivers of food insecurity.
