Summer Meals Support Fund helps 17 sites

Partners for a Hunger-Free Oregon is thrilled to announce that 17 grantees have been selected as 2015 Summer Meals Support Fund recipients!

More than $53,000 was distributed this year to school districts and nonprofits throughout the state to support their work with the Summer Food Service Program in their communities. From Baker City to Klamath Falls to Waldport, these organizations use creative strategies and collaborative partnerships to make sure that Oregon kids have healthy meals and fun activities this summer.

Our 2015 grantees are veterans to the Summer Food Service Program; this year, our support will help each community reach even more kids.

Lane County School District 4J is growing their program by adding seven new sites and a breakfast meal service and will be serving meals for more weeks during the summer. The YMCA of Klamath Falls is partnering with Integral Youth Services to bring more fun activities to sites, which will increase participation. Many programs are using transportation strategies to reach more kids; Neighbors for Kids in Depoe Bay has purchased a van and is able to bring kids to their day program from surrounding communities. Seashore Family Literacy is using a bus to deliver mobile meals and activities to a nearby community, in addition to their on-site program.

In addition to providing great nutrition, the groups we support ensure kids stay active and engaged when school is out. The Boys and Girls Club of Portland Metropolitan Area has a jam-packed summer planned for their youth, including activities by the Oregon Zoo, the U.S. Forest Service Forest Inside Out program, OSU Extension Service Food Hero program and the Portland Winterhawks. Baker School District partners with their local library, YMCA and the Baker County Community Literacy Coalition to help draw kids to their sites and provide fun enrichment activities.

2015 marks the seventh year that Partners for a Hunger-Free Oregon has distributed grants to expand Summer Food Service Programs in Oregon. Over the years, generous donations have allowed us to distribute nearly $570,000. We would like to thank and acknowledge donors to the 2015 Summer Meals Support Fund!
