Things you can do on an ongoing basis:Talk with your children about what it means to be hungry in the US and why it is important to be sensitive towards people in the community or at their school who are hungry or who don't have as much as they do. Hunger in the US may not look like the hunger or malnutrition in many Third World countries, but it does exist. Don't make judgements about people you see in the grocery store who are an Oregon Trail Card for Food Stamps (or for other benefits). Refrain from commenting on their purchases. If you see a checker or other grocery store employee hassling someone because they are using Food Stamps, let the store management know. Make a conscious effort to not talk or act negatively towards people in the community who are hungry or low-income. Don't perpetuate myths and stereotypes about people who are living in poverty. And remember, because hunger is not always visible, you never know if one of your co-workers, neighbors, parent at your child's school, or elsewhere might be in that situation. |
