Unemployment is at 10 percent. The number of food insecure Americans increased in 2008, according to USDA – with 21 percent of U.S. families with children classified by USDA as food insecure in 2008. While food prices went down last year, the recession still forced the poor and middle class into a financial struggle.
Each day, 20,000 new applicants sign up for SNAP/Food Stamps, reports The New York Times; participation increased by two-thirds or more in 270 counties. Meanwhile, retailers serving areas that were hit hardest by the downturn should look at SNAP as an ongoing opportunity. Read more…
