New Summer Food Program for Kids Begins in Clackamas County

Milwaukie, OR - July 13, 2004 - Four local organizations are working together this summer to offer free activities and meals to children in Clackamas County. From now through August 23, children through 18 can stop by any of five locations for some summer fun and a free lunch, courtesy of Clackamas County Children's Commission - Head Start, North Clackamas Parks and Recreation District, Oak Grove Community Center, and Eastham Community School.

"We are all very excited to be working together to offer this wonderful service to families in our county this summer. We hope all parents will feel welcome to bring their children to the nearest site to meet some of the other families in their community and enjoy a freshly-prepared lunch," said Helene Fedewa, program manager for Clackamas County Children's Commission.

Lunches and activities will be provided to all children, and all families and children are welcome to attend. Park sites will offer games, outdoor activities and educational programs in conjunction with the North Clackamas Park and Recreation District Recmobile. No advance registration or application is needed. Funding for the meals is provided by the USDA's Summer Food Service Program.

Although meals are only available for children, a limited number of free meals will be available for parents or other family members who wish to volunteer. For more information on the Summer Food Service Program or volunteering, please call Helene Fedewa at 503-631-8035.
