Governor Kulongoski challenges Oregonians
On May 23, the Governor formally announced the release of the Executive Summary for year 5 of Oregon’s "Act to End Hunger."
The Act to End Hunger highlights accomplishments and sets priorities for addressing hunger in Oregon. There has been some significant accomplishments, but there is also much to do.
Governor Kulongoski challenged specific segments of the community to get involved in helping to end hunger in Oregon:

Challenge #1 Oregon Medical Professionals
Background: A recent survey conducted by the Childhood Hunger Initiative (CHI) asked Oregon medical professionals what they knew about the impact of hunger and food insecurity on children. Although many were aware of the dire consequences, an organized effort to reach patients with information and resources was lacking.
The Governor challenged medical professionals to help identify risks for hunger among their patients and provide information about resources such as food stamps and emergency food. CHI announced that it was in the process of creating a continuing education credit course that would help medical practitioners play a more active role in helping to end hunger.
Challenge #2: Oregon businesses
Background: During the school year children and youth can eat nutritious meals at school cafeterias. During the summer break it's a lot harder for kids in low-income families. Only 25% of children eligible for free and reduced price meals during the school year are able to get a meal from a Summer Food Program in their community.
The Governor challenged Oregon businesses to
"adopt" a local Summer Food site , to help with financial needs and encourage their employees to volunteer to serve meals during lunch breaks. To learn more

Challenge #3: Oregon Food Processors
Background: For several years the Oregon Food Bank network has been struggling to get enough food to hungry Oregonians. The economy has created some changes in the food industry and donations have slowed. Additionally, USDA food commodities - once a staple for food banks - have significantly declined. Unfortunately, the need for emergency food has not decreased.
The Governor challenged the food industry to think creatively about how it can step up to the plate and get more healthy food to hungry Oregonians through the Oregon Food Bank network.
Challenge #4: EVERYONE!
In 2004, Governor Kulongoski stated that "Oregonians have a proud reputation of coming together to solve tough problems to build a better future. One person alone can't fight hunger. We can eliminate hunger if we all work together."
The Governor encouraged individuals to
plan events that will raise awareness about hunger in their local communities. To
