If you have more than a few hours, you can:Work with your child's school to organize a campaign to get eligible parents to sign their kids up for school meal programs -- more kids will have access to school meals and your child's school may become eligible for funds from other federal programs as well. Help organize an activity and meal program in your community that could offer meals using the federal Summer Food and/or After-School Snack and Meal Programs to feed kids. For more information on these programs, call the Oregon Hunger Relief Task Force at (503) 595-5501. Organize letter writing or phone call campaigns when issues related to hunger and poverty come up at the federal or state level. Start by talking with your friends, family, people at your office or church, neighbors, and others. Volunteer to coordinate a food drive or holiday collection program at your office, church, school, or other organizations. Help your kids organize a food drive at their school, through clubs they participate in, and other organizations. Find out which lawmakers are taking steps to support programs or activities that address hunger and volunteer for their next campaign. Start a community garden program in your area. Organize or volunteer for a campaign encouraging people to take advantage of the Earned Income Tax Credit and Working Family Child Care Tax Credit. Make the extra effort to support businesses that are active in the community, offer family-friendly work policies, pay living wages, and that give to local causes. Adopt a family or mentor a child. |
