If you have a few hours

If you have a few hours, you can:

Arrange for a presentation on hunger at your church, school, PTA, school board, neighborhood association, club, or other group. Contact us at 503-595-5502 for assistance.

Plant more than you need for your family in your garden and donate extra to local food bank or meal program.  The Oregon Food Bank can help connect you with community gardening groups in the Portland area.

Organize a group of friends, family members, co-workers, etc. to take part in the Advocacy Alert's "Take 5" actions every month. You can sign up for the advocacy alert by contacting us.

Order Food Stamp Publications [.pdf] free of charge and arrange to have them posted in your local grocery store, apartment building common areas, community center, laundromats, or anywhere else in your community that people might see them.

Support ballot measures that will alleviate hunger and poverty. This means voting, as well as talking to people about why you believe these issues are important.

Educate yourself on what it is really like to live at or near a minimum wage. If it has been a while since you've lived on that kind of a budget, think about how you would pay rent, buy food, and cover the other usual costs of living at the federal poverty level of $18,000 per year for a family of four. Visit the online poverty tour.

Write a letter to the editor commenting on current issues or policies related to hunger.

Call or write your legislators to express your support for all programs that alleviate hunger-programs like food stamps, WIC, housing assistance, etc.
