| Child Nutrition Reauthorization |
Child Nutrition ReauthorizationChild nutrition program reauthorization passed unanimously in both chambers of Congress on June 23 and 24. The President signed the bill into law on June 30, 2004. The reauthorization contains a number of good changes, including the expansion of the Lugar pilot to Oregon and five other new states. This pilot increases access to the Summer Food Service Program by offering sponsors increased meal reimbursements and reduced administrative requirements. Increased access to the program equals more children served equals fewer children going hungry! The entire Oregon delegation supported the final reauthorization bills. Representative Wu worked hard in the early stages of the House reauthorization bill to include Oregon in the Lugar pilot. Senators Gordon Smith and Ron Wyden were instrumental in Oregon's inclusion in the Lugar pilot in the Senate bill. Please take a few minutes to write or call Representative Wu and Senators Smith and Wyden, as well as their staff, to thank them for their efforts on behalf of Oregon's hungry children.
